  1. The importance of the Project for the culture and heritage of the Podhale, Małopolska subregions and for Poland
  2. It will protect a significant part of the national cultural heritage (due to the role of Podhale and the Highland region in the culture and history of Poland).
  3. It will become a valuable repository of Podhale cultural history, important from the scientific, popularising, cultural and educational point of view.
  4. It will document and popularise the important contribution of highlander folk culture to Polish culture.
  5. Due to the borderland nature of Podhale, it will gradually introduce polonica and Podhale cultural history, which are in the collections of Slovak libraries, into the common reading circuit.
  6. It will expand the offer of Polish digital libraries with dialectal literary and folklore texts from the Tatras.
  7. It will make available and disseminate the scientific and research achievements of the Podhale State Vocational University in Nowy Targ (PPUZ).
  8. It will complement the panorama of Polish digital libraries of a regional nature.
  9. It will be part of the process of thematic specialisation of digital libraries in Poland.
  10. It will enable the use of texts concerning Podhale and the Highland region created before 1939, whose accessibility, due to their uniqueness, is very limited. The time cut-off of 1939 is necessitated by the expiry of copyright. There will also be newer texts, but only those to which the University owns copyright or obtains free of charge.
  11. It will contribute to the building of an information society and the development of the Tatra region.
  12. Main activities in the Project
    1. A device in the PPUZ Digitisation Studio, equipped with modern equipment for digitisation of prints, newspapers, books. Training of personnel. The studio is created at the PPUZ Library.
    2. Digitisation of several thousand pages from Podhale natives, mainly books and other publications written in dialect or dealing with highlander culture, published before 1939 (copyrights expired), as well as important documents.
    3. Description of the resources planned to be digitised:

3 124 pcs resources with a total of 26 246 pages, including works from before 1939 - 84 pieces, post-war works - 43 pieces, PPWSZ publications - 43 pieces. and 2954 photos, which consist of:

1) regional articles - books and iconographic, cartographic and musical collections as well as documents of social life concerning Podhale and, more broadly, the Highland region,

2) cultural heritage - incunabula, old prints, iconographic and cartographic collections,

3) photos: Tatrzański, Nowy Targ and Suski poviats, Silesian Beskids, Białi and Sądecki Highlands. Time of creation: from the earliest years (mid-19th century) to the 1970s covering 3 topics: Karol Wojtyła (later Pope John Paul II) and Stefan Wyszyński among the highlanders, Millennium peregrination of the image of Our Lady of Częstochowa in the Highland region, History of education in the Tatra Mountains in photography.

Changes in the number of works may result in difficulties in obtaining works or failure to obtain copyrights to them.

  1. We provide digitised collections – in cooperation with the Provincial Public Library in Krakow – on the PPL Małopolska Digital Library (MDL) portal, as the separate collection, the Podhale Digital Library. PPL is currently carrying out a similar project to ours (worth several million PLN); referred to as MDL2. In particular, the new portal will have many more possibilities in terms of building a platform for sharing collections than the current one (for example, extending the standard of digitised data so that it can be viewed on mobile devices). After the launch of the MDL2 portal, the Podhale Digital Library collections will also be transferred to it.
  2. Project Finance
  1. Value of the project (total costs)                                    433 292.05 PLN

  3. Own contribution of the University                               82 155.21 PLN
